Toddlers and formula

2005-07-01 07:06:42 PM
In another thread, someone stated that toddlers should still be drinking
formula (or breastmilk) to two years. I generally d/c formula at the one
year mark, which my son is approaching. Am I misinformed? Do you all who
don't breastfeed to two years (and when did the rec become two years? Boy,
I missed that one - thought it was one year) still give formula for another
year? I was going to switch to whole milk for my little guy in August.

My first child was mostly formula-fed. Her pediatrician said there was
no need to feed formula past the first year if she was eating a
well-balanced diet of other foods. She wasn't much of a solids-eater at
that point, so I continued with formula until she would eat a more
varied diet (around 15-16 months old). Formula is an easy source of
complete nutrition, but once a toddler is eating enough other food to
have a balanced diet, I don't see why the formula would be needed. Now,
if 95% of a one-year-old's food intake is formula (the case with my
daughter), I wouldn't just switch over to milk.

The recommendation by WHO is to *breastfeed* for two years,
because there are benefits seen to breastfeeding for at least that
long. There isn't a similar recommendation for formula feeding.
After a year, assuming everything is normal (child growing well,
eating a wide variety of solids, no allergy issues), the child
can replace what formula can deliver with a varied diet (including
cow's milk or other foods which provide the necessary protein, fat,
calcium, vit. D, etc.). Formula is continued in the second year
when there's a situation where the diet isn't otherwise adequate.
That's not to say that it's inappropriate to continue formula into
the second year in a normal, healthy child. It's just that it isn't
necessary. The benefits you get from the second year of breastfeeding
aren't necessarily benefits that are replicated by formula.
Best wishes,

Thanks. I wasn't sure if I had missed a change in recommendations or
something. My little guy eats like a field hand, so I'm not concerned that
he's not getting a balanced diet. :) Appreciate the info.

Like others have said, whole milk is ok for a toddler who is eating
well. My now 15 month old drinks a combo of whole milk and good start2
formula, but only because she doesn't really drink the whole milk by
itself, and seems to prefer the formula. So for now we do a little of both.

Re:Toddlers and formula

My sister has 2 kids and both were breastfed. Her pediatrician told her
that after a yr it was okay to stop because of all the food intake they
were getting.
