Re:Toddlers and formula

In another thread, someone stated that toddlers should still be drinking
formula (or breastmilk) to two years. I generally d/c formula at the one
year mark, which my son is approaching. Am I misinformed? Do you all who
don't breastfeed to two years (and when did the rec become two years? Boy,
I missed that one - thought it was one year) still give formula for another
year? I was going to switch to whole milk for my little guy in August.
The recommendation by WHO is to *breastfeed* for two years,
because there are benefits seen to breastfeeding for at least that
long. There isn't a similar recommendation for formula feeding.
After a year, assuming everything is normal (child growing well,
eating a wide variety of solids, no allergy issues), the child
can replace what formula can deliver with a varied diet (including
cow's milk or other foods which provide the necessary protein, fat,
calcium, vit. D, etc.). Formula is continued in the second year
when there's a situation where the diet isn't otherwise adequate.
That's not to say that it's inappropriate to continue formula into
the second year in a normal, healthy child. It's just that it isn't
necessary. The benefits you get from the second year of breastfeeding
aren't necessarily benefits that are replicated by formula.
