Does anyone have a recommendation that would explain to a toddler what
dreams are? I've been telling my DD that they're not real, and its like a
movie you see when you're sleeping, only often you're in it...And that
nothing you see in your dreams can really hurt you, but its normal to be
scared, etc. But I'm not sure I'm really making sense to her. Books have
worked well for other issues (impending baby, new baby, potty, etc). Does
anyone know of a good one?

I haven't had a book but #1 had a set of nightmares about having a spider in
her bed. (set off, I think by the pattern on the sheet) She's a bit older
than a toddler (nearly 4) but I have managed to get the basic idea across by
talking about dreams/nightmares. I'd say to her "I had a funny dream last
night, I dreamt that you and Anna were driving the car to Legoland and I was
trying to catch you on my bike" At first she'd say "I didn't" but shortly
she realised that it wasn't true. Since then she told me one morning that
she dreamt there was a spider in her bed, but knew it wasn't true so didn't
wake me up.
I think at the same time as saying that the dream can't hurt, you have to
make sure that they do feel able to call to you for reassurance when it's
night. If it's a major problem then a nightlight may help.
