High fiber foods like bran muffins, figs, most other dried fruits.

Also, plenty of water, fresh fruits and veggies. If the problem is
caused by the 6yo not eating fruits and veggies, I'd definitly
reccomend the dried fruit.

I can't find that. I tried Benefiber chew able tablets,
they seem to give him a bloated tummy. This is for a 6yr old.
There is Senokot, which is easily found at most any drugstore in the US. I
don't know where you are.

Yep. A little cardboard box of sultanas (raisins) or mixed dried fruit and
nuts eaten each day might be a good start to get things moving. I'd up the
water intake as well because sometimes children that age get by on a few
mouthfuls of liquid a day, become dehydrated and the moisture gets drawn
out of their stools.
My son has a problem with going as well. He's 6 you like the OP's child. I
know that increasing his fibre and water intake will help but he fights me
on some of these foods. I can get some extra fibre in him because he does
like fruits and such but what is the next best thing to water that might be
OK. I know water is best but I can only get him to drink so much. What
else might be OK for liquids. Also, what foods should he avoid (other than
the obvious junk food). Cheese? Anything else.
Also, my husband has suggested stool softeners on occasion. Would this be
OK?

While berries are fruit, they can cause constipation.

Re:Laxatives

Thanks to everyone who replied. I was wrong, I thought I read about
the medication here, but it was actually in a discussion forums.

The medication is miralax or peglax
I guess for us (Canadian resident) we can order it through
www.pegflakes.com/index.html
My son went through too many episodes, and tried many remedies that was
suggested in here.

Soon after I posted, I realized my posr looked like I am promoting
something. Your reply confirmed it. Oh well, live and learn.
As for my son, he recovered from the problem since the original post.
However, I will ask about miralax (snake oil, ha ha ) next time when I
see his pediatrician.

Great! So the cure for constipation means waiting two days.
No meds necessary!
